  • What do you mean by upcycled?
Many of us have heard the term, a variation on the word recycle, with the caveat that something is better or improved from the original condition. At Spotted Joy, this means we do not use new fabrics. We source unwanted or surplussed materials that were once used as clothes or decor. We also source fabrics that are deemed surplus and would be tossed into a landfill. We wash, sanitize and press all materials prior to upcycling them into a new product. Because of the variety of fabrics we come across, many items we create are one of a kind, and at the very most a short run. Even still, two of the same items may have small variations to them, which we find charming. So you know when you find something you love on Spotted Joy that you are getting something truly unique. We do not endeavour to make hundreds of copies of any creation regardless of its popularity. But we do have a look and a style that you may find is just what you’re after. Our throw pillows and dog beds are stuffed with cleaned recycled soft plastics and/or stuffing/scrap fabrics from our studio. We have found they are just as comfortable as new polyester filler and much more sound for the environment.
  • Are your products made from entirely upcycled materials?
Our handmade creations are made from about 90% recycled fabrics. Sometimes it is necessary to purchase a new material (such as hardware for bags). Our thread is new and purchased for its high quality. For the most part though, we source and use unwanted materials that were once clothes or decor. We also source fabrics that are deemed excess and would end up in a landfill.
  • Do you clean the fabrics before using them?
Yes, absolutely. We wash, sanitize and press all materials prior to upcycling them into a new product.
  • Do you take custom orders?
If you see a design on our website and would like to request it in a different colour palette or size, please email us at info@spottedjoy.com and we will make it for you! Keep in mind, overly specific requests are not able to be fulfilled. General colour schemes and sizes... absolutely!
  • What carrier do you use to ship?
We use Canada Post for all shipping. For more information, please go to our Terms & Conditions.
